Mute Swan

The Mute Swan is the national bird of Denmark and while the name suggests it cannot make a sound, the species is not completely mute. Mute Swans can make sounds like grunting and snorting and tend to hiss when aggressive. The species is one of the heaviest flying birds in the world.

Gyrfalcon

The official national bird of Iceland, the Gyrfalcon were revered by the Vikings. This falcon species is found in very few parts of the world and thrives in severely cold climates including the Arctic region. The Gyrfalcon is a predatorial bird and can hunt prey as big as a hare.

Kiwi

A tiny and unique bird, the Kiwi is not only the national bird but has also become the national icon of New Zealand. The species has hair-like feathers and no tail. As it is an endangered species, the New Zealand government has taken several measures to prevent its extinction. New Zealanders are also nicknamed 'Kiwis'.

Rhinoceros Hornbill

Rhinoceros Hornbills are known for their long bill and a stand-out casque on their head. These national birds are also an important symbol for several tribes in Malaysia. Unfortunately, the Rhinoceros Hornbill is feared to soon be an endangered species as it is widely hunted for food and ornamental purposes.

Purple-crested Turaco

A small country, Swaziland is home to varied bird species out of which, the Purple-crested Turaco is named its national bird. This species belongs to the Musophagidae family and is can be easily recognized from its distinct crimson flight feathers. They are found in moist woodlands, evergreen thickets, and riparian growths.

Greater Flamingo

The national bird of the Bahamas, there are a total of 6 species of Flamingos in the world. These birds contain a pigment known as a carotenoid that enables them to have the pink and orange colors on their bodies. Flamingos are characterized by long, thin necks and slim legs.

Common Nightingale

Known for its melodious voice, the Common Nightingale is a shy, elusive bird. It was formerly classified as a member of the thrush family. This bird has a small body frame with a rust-brown tail and is difficult to spot. The Common Nightingale has been adopted as the national bird of Croatia.

In the year 1990, the Lapwing was declared to be the national bird of the Republic of Ireland by the committee of Irish Wildlife Conservancy. While several species were considered suitable candidates for the position, the Lapwing stood out. The bird is characterized by its shrill cry and slow flight.

Golden Eagle

A country that is part of the United Kingdom, Scotland's national bird was declared as the Golden Eagle. The bird gets its name from the light, golden-brown plumage on its neck. It was a movement by the conservative charity RSPB Scotland that pushed this species to be recognized as the national bird of the country.

The Ceylon Junglefowl is the national bird of Sri Lanka as it is not found in any other part of the world. It is part of the family Gallus that has been recorded in Asia. This colorful, vibrant bird is also commonly depicted on the postage stamps of Sri Lanka.

A beautifully vibrant colored bird, the Keel-billed Toucan is the national bird of Belize. It is also popularly known as the Rainbow-billed Toucan or Sulfur-breasted Toucan. It is mostly black in color, with the throat and chest being either white or yellow. This species can be primarily found in the tropical and sub-tropical rainforests.

Saimese Fireback

The Siamese Fireback, also known as the Diard's Fireback, is Thailand's national bird. It is not endemic to that country and is also found in several countries such as Australia and China. The male birds have a bright yellow spot in the middle of the backs from where they get the name "firebacks".

Andean Condor

A South American bird, the Andean Condor is not only the national bird of Chile, but of Bolivia, Ecuador, and Colombia too. The species holds the spot for being the largest living land birds in North America that can fly. Measures are being undertaken for conservation of the species as it is recognized as a "Near Threatened" one.

The species is widely known for its vivid colors and elongated tail and can be found mentioned throughout songs, texts, and folklore part of the Indian culture. It is also admired for the grace it exudes while dancing.

Also known as Dippers or European Dippers, the White-throated Dipper is designated as the national bird of Norway. The tiny bird belongs to the class of Aves and features sharp feathers that aid in a swift flight.
