Officially known as the Metropolitan Costume Institute Benefit, the Met Gala is an extravagant black-tie affair. Keeping up with the annual extravaganza, the 2019 Met Gala was themed “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The theme was inspired by a 1964-essay by Susan Sontag, Notes on Camp. According to Sontag, Camp represents “utterly eccentric aesthetic sensibility.” No wonder the 2019 Met Gala saw celebs sashaying down, or should we say carried, to the red carpet in the most out-of-the-world ensembles. Check out some of the best celebrity looks at the Met Gala.

Janelle Monáe

Looking like a work of modern art, Janelle Monáe nailed the 2019 Met Gala theme. The singer wore a custom Christian Siriano with four hats piled on top of one another. Keeping up with her quirky style, the lashed eye on her top was motorized, so it kept winking at the cameras. The pink skirt and the single black and white glove made a fun play of contrasting colors.

Billy Porter

Outdoing his Oscar 2019 finery, Billy Porter made a glorious entrance at the Met Gala. The Pose star arrived in an elaborate golden costume and headdress, paired with sweeping golden wings. Reminiscent of Isis, an ancient Egyptian goddess, Porter’s “Sun God” ensemble was designed by NYC label The Blonds. The ensemble included custom gold-leaf Giuseppe Zanotti shoes with fine jewels by Andreoli, John Hardy, and Oscar Heyman.

Want to see a real-life Cinderella? Just check out Zendaya’s 2019 Met Gala look. Designed by Tommy Hilfiger, Zendaya’s elaborate blue dress fabulously lit up on the pink... we mean red carpet. With a Snow-White like hairdo, the former Disney star looked like a Disney princess. For a “Zenderalla” moment, she collaborated with stylist Law Roach, who twirled his wand to light up Zendaya’s dress.

Wearing custom Versace, the Jenner sisters looked ultra-glamorous in feathered gowns. Their looks have been compared to the evil sisters from Ella Enchanted and the stepsisters in Disney’s animated Cinderella. Before their walk down the red carpet, Kylie had hinted at what the sisters’ looks would be like. She posted this quote from Susan Sontag’s essay, “…Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers.”

Jared Leto
Gloriously dressed in a complete camp look, Jared Leto literally made heads turn. Leto arrived on the red carpet with one of the oddest accessories, a replica of his head! This was a throwback to the severed heads that models carried on the ramp during Gucci’s autumn/winter 2018 runway show. Wearing a blood red Gucci robe with a shiny crystal harness, Leto was the quintessential Gucci muse.

In custom couture from the house of Iris Van Herpen, it seems Jordan Roth brought the dramatics of Broadway to the Met Gala red carpet. We expect nothing less from the president of five Broadway theatres. His extravagant multi-layered ensemble resembled an optical illusion of a closed theatre curtain. When he raised his arms, his stately cape opened to reveal a new layer with an amplified view of a theatre.

Always a treat on the red carpet, Lupita Nyong'o did not disappoint at the 2019 Met Gala. Her stunning sparkly see-through gown with rainbow-colored wings sure made many heads turn. Completed with a colorful fan, the multi-colored Versace ensemble was one of the most fun odes to the Camp theme. The best part of her outfit was the gold Afro picks in her gravity-defying hairdo styled by Vernon Francois.
