Looking like a work of modern art, Janelle Monáe nailed the 2019 Met Gala theme. The singer wore a custom Christian Siriano with four hats piled on top of one another. Keeping up with her quirky style, the lashed eye on her top was motorized, so it kept winking at the cameras. The pink skirt and the single black and white glove made a fun play of contrasting colors.
Outdoing his Oscar 2019 finery, Billy Porter made a glorious entrance at the Met Gala. The Pose star arrived in an elaborate golden costume and headdress, paired with sweeping golden wings. Reminiscent of Isis, an ancient Egyptian goddess, Porter’s “Sun God” ensemble was designed by NYC label The Blonds. The ensemble included custom gold-leaf Giuseppe Zanotti shoes with fine jewels by Andreoli, John Hardy, and Oscar Heyman.
Officially known as the Metropolitan Costume Institute Benefit, the Met Gala is an extravagant black-tie affair. Keeping up with the annual extravaganza, the 2019 Met Gala was themed “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The theme was inspired by a 1964-essay by Susan Sontag, Notes on Camp. According to Sontag, Camp represents “utterly eccentric aesthetic sensibility.” No wonder the 2019 Met Gala saw celebs sashaying down, or should we say carried, to the red carpet in the most out-of-the-world ensembles.
