Reality TV may have the word real in it, but let’s face the simple fact that it’s so far away from it. As entertaining as it can be to watch a freight train wreak havoc while you enjoy your sips of coffee while the drama unfolds, it’s also not really unexpected. That’s primarily because, deep down inside, we all know that we’re just being shown the same TV drama from a different angle. So, here’s a list of shows that claim to be reality TV but are quite the opposite.

American “reality” show Say Yes To The Dress follows the events at the high-end bridal store Kleinfeld. Debuting in 2007, each season profiles brides looking for the perfect dress and follows the drama and tension that ensues. But guess what? It’s not real. Amanda Lauren wrote about how consultants ignore the bride’s ideas and Courtney Wright said producers would ask them to say dramatic stuff for soundbites.

Wherever there’s family, there’s drama. Filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada, Pawn Stars documents the everyday activities at the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop. While the artifacts are authentic, the people don’t just walk into the shop and sell what they have. Every customer has already signed a consent form and the items have been vetted, examined, and even priced. So, even all the haggling is staged.

Hell’s Kitchen seems aptly named for Gordon Ramsay’s reality cooking show, where chefs compete to win the position of Head Chef at a fancy high-end restaurant. But have you ever wondered why all these experienced chefs mess up even staple items? Former contestant Tek Moore spilled the tea on how producers would sneakily swap ingredients and items to create drama. So, guess they’re not idiot sandwiches?

As much as one may want it to be, Cupcake Wars is not a show in which people throw cupcakes at each other but a reality baking competition where contestants create unique cupcakes with the most bizarre ingredients. The three-round Canadian show has four competing teams and a $10,000 prize. Supposedly, the contestants know which ingredients they’ll be using months in advance, which gives them enough time to prepare.

One man chooses the love of his life from 25 beautiful women. With 24 seasons and running, The Bachelor has been a major source of memes, jokes, and other forms of parody. Aside from the casual house arrest, producers have been known to go as far as tracking menstrual cycles to create drama. If this doesn’t convince you, they even have in-the-moment emotional interviews that are then used to manipulate emotions on screen. Will this stop us from watching it? We think not.
